Reviving Beltane Eve
Today Beltane Eve is mainly celebrated in Scotland, although there is also a large festival in Hampshire, culminating in the burning of a wicker man. As Cultural England seeks to revive forgotten social customs, Beltane Eve is definitely on our ‘to do’ list. Although the current restrictions due to coronavirus restrict movement and gatherings, there is no reason why in future years celebration should not take place.
Apart from social interaction, main element of the Beltane Eve is fire. Whilst it may not always be practical to have a fire, candles can be supplemented, becoming a Beltane Eve Candle Festival, bringing communities together. In a similar vein torchlit processions could be organised. Creative elements might wish to make large or even miniature wicker men.
Whilst many still recognise May Day, we should not forget the importance of Beltane Eve on England’s social cultural calendar and making it an inclusive activity for future generations.
